Dear TEE community,

Recently, a colleague asked me how Temple Emanu-El has successfully built a strong cohort of LGBTQ+ Jews. I explained that one key factor is the community’s existing commitment to inclusivity, which I inherited upon arriving in Rochester. For instance, when we began discussing the importance of recognizing individuals’ pronouns, the question wasn’t “Why should we do this?” but rather “How can we do this?”

Another essential aspect of inclusion is visibility. Simply stating that we welcome marginalized groups is insufficient if we do not actively acknowledge and celebrate their unique experiences. To genuinely include LGBTQ+ Jews, we must go beyond symbolic recognition during Pride Shabbat once a year. That’s why I strive to incorporate diverse service materials and programs throughout the year.

For example, this week’s Shabbat service will feature readings and songs in honor of Trans Day of Visibility (TDOV). This observance is vital for all of us as it reflects our fundamental Jewish belief in the equal dignity of every person. This is particularly important given the current climate, where trans Americans face cruel dehumanization from our government. By observing TDOV, we reaffirm our commitment to justice, equality, and the celebration of diversity, emphasizing that every individual, created in the divine image, deserves to be acknowledged and valued.

I invite you to join me in reaffirming our commitment to making Temple Emanu-El a sanctuary, a safe space, for everyone.
