COVID-19 Symptom Study

From Temple Emanu-El member Leslie Schwartz:

I’d like to invite you to join me in participating in a Covid-19 study, called the COVID-19 Symptom Study, that I’ve been a part of for many months now. The goal of this study is to help scientists better understand the risk factors for Covid-19, and thus help slow the spread of the disease.

Participation in the COVID-19 Symptom Study is done through an app that’s easy to download onto your phone, iPad, or computer. The first time you sign in, you’ll answer demographic questions. From then on, you’ll log in daily and answer a few questions along the lines of: Are you feeling normal today? (If not, you’ll get a list of symptoms to check off.) Have you had a covid test? Are you reporting from your home zip code? And that’s really about it – the daily check-in takes about 15 seconds.

Most recently, data from the study has been used to better understand ‘Long Covid,’ a form of Covid-19 whose symptoms are not serious enough to land a person in the hospital yet which persist for many weeks or months. This long-term illness is frustrating and debilitating for those who are affected, with the potential to have a significant impact on wider society. But it hasn’t been clear how many people are suffering from Long COVID or who is most at risk. The more people who use the COVID-19 Symptom app, the more useful the data will be.

Thanks for considering being a participant – we’re all in this together.
